Have you ever done something out of duty? Did you notice how you were motivated in the beginning but after a while you were left feeling hollow and maybe even filled with some resentment?
I can imagine Martha from the bible was left feeling like this too. Martha’s duty was to serve, clean & cook & was merely fulfilling the role of what was expected of her.
Perhaps she even asked herself the question, “If I don’t do this, who else will?”
Maybe if Martha felt she had an alternative she would have sat at the feet of Jesus, just like her sister did or maybe it was the pressure to conform that prevented her.
Either way, I wonder how many things we do in our own lives, out of duty or simply because it is expected of us?
