When our children were small, we had a couple things we told them about trusting others. First, if anyone told them not to tell us something, they were supposed to come directly to us and tell us. Second, the person who says, “Trust me,” probably isn’t to be trusted.

So who do you trust today?

Trusting has opened the door to a lot of trouble for most of us. Because we trusted, we were hurt. Of course the truth is that those who hurt us took advantage of our trust. It wasn’t our trust that hurt us, it was those who betrayed that trust. And there is a lesson in that.

But first I want to clarify just what trust is. Trust is a gift we give. I can’t think of a better way to put it. Trust is on our side of the relationship. No one…
