Bible Observations

This chapter is about how Judah began to rebuild the temple and how outsiders responded to them. The encouragement to the leaders to renew their pursuit of having the temple rebuilt came from two prophets: Haggai and Zechariah the son of Iddo. This encouragement moved the two main leaders to rise up and get everybody to continue the mission for which they were sent by Cyrus. The prophets didn’t cease their encouragement when the temple construction resumed. This may be the first time since… Deborah? Maybe? May be the first time since the time of the judges when the prophet encouraged a leader to do something and then kept providing support while the mission was being executed.

This didn’t come without opposition. Tattenai the governor of the province Beyond the River (wherever that is) and Shethar-bozenai asked the leaders who gave them the decree to continue rebuilding the temple. We…
