13:11–13 As he closes his letter, Paul expresses his desire for the Corinthian believers to be united. He encourages them to seek restoration, comfort one another, and live in peace. He concludes with a benediction.

13:13 Paul concludes with a benediction that mentions the three members of the Trinity. The terms Paul uses—“grace,” “love,” and “fellowship”—emphasize his concern for reconciliation with God (2 Cor 5:20) and unity among believers (8:4). Paul also refers to the Trinity when he discusses spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians (see 1 Cor 12:4–11 and note)

Some English translations split 2 Cor 13:12 and number “All the saints greet you” as v. 13 (see esv, niv, nasb, nkjv). These translations then place Paul’s benediction as v. 14.

note

12:4–11 Paul places his discussion of spiritual gifts within the theological context of the Trinity; the unity amid diversity within God’s nature should also find reflection in the variety of God-given gifts among believers. Paul’s references to the “same Spirit,” “same Lord,” and “same God” in 1 Cor 12:4–6 invoke this notion of the Trinity. Paul mentions several gifts in this passage, but his list is representative, not exhaustive. His point is that all the gifts of the Spirit benefit the body of Christ in some way.

12 Greet one another with a holy kiss.

13 All the saints greet you.

14 May help from the Lord Jesus Christ, and love from God and fellowship from the Holy Spirit be with all of you.
