Mark Goodacre on the Beloved Disciple

The Jesus Memoirs

Mark Goodacre has up to 79 online lectures about different topics relating to the New Testament and early Christianity at NT Pod. Check out “NT Pod 38: Who is the Beloved Disciple in John’s Gospel?” He points out that the Gospel may imply that the character is John, the son of Zebedee, to the reading who is familiar with how John is consistently paired with Peter or part of the core group of three disciples in other New Testament traditions. On the other hand, I think that a second century reader who is familiar with these other texts in the emerging canon could have made these connections, but I am less confident that the original audience of the Gospel would have done so.
