Now that we live in the mountains, our family has begun a summer tradition of picking fresh cherries from a nearby mountain orchard. The kids love hunting for the “perfect” cherry, which would be nearly black with ripeness, and my wife and I love having fresh, juicy cherries to cook with.
Of course, we have to keep an eye on our two little ones. In their anticipation, they tend to grab the first cherries they find – even if this means picking them up off the ground! The secret to finding the sweetest cherries, however, is to climb a ladder and reach as high as humanly possible. It’s on these high, “hard-to-get-to” branches that the best fruit can be found.
